Welcome everyone, I hope you find the forum useful. As it's all new I would love to hear your feedback. There will obviously be some overlap with The Gedling Herbalist Facebook page, but I'm hoping that this forum will be a much better resource in the long run. It should be easy to search for older posts and look things up by subject. My aim is for it to be a tool for use in self treatment of minor conditions. Herbs are complex and it never is just one herb for one ailment. Lots of herbs can be used to treat any one condition, and almost every condition is best treated with several herbs. In addition, every herb has many different chemical constituents, sometimes hundreds Herbs are not always safe for everyone. So it really helps to know what you're doing in order to be safe and achieve the best effect. You can learn a lot from just a few good books, courses, workshops and even from websites - just do a quality check first as not all sources are reliable. Many herbs are safe for most people and experimenting with them can be very empowering. All healthcare is about the balance between benefit and risk of harm, so common sense is always a good start. Please use plenty of it!
I feel it's important to encourage people to use herbs and to treat themselves and their families for minor complaints. As a medical herbalist, I feel I can best do this on a local level. I try to offer educational activities like herb walks and workshops where possible and am also hoping for this forum to become a valuable source.
So - please post away, and let me know what you think.
